MARIA ANDERSON achieved a decisive victory over millionaire developer, Gonzalo Sanabria by a 55.41% to 44.59% margin. Over 6000 votes were cast in the election held April 14, 2009.

Despite Sanabria's plea to "take back Coral Gables" and his portrayal of himself as a friend of the environment, voters felt otherwise.  Recent publicity highlighted his voting record to recommend building outside the UDB line, a growth plan developed to create a buffer between Miami-Dade County and the Everglades.  Anderson, a staunch supporter of the environment, sided with the City of Coral Gables Commission and signed on as a supporter of the UDB plan.

A commissioner for eight years, Anderson had previously been involved in local politics at the grass roots level.  She was active in the failed attempt to block the development of Merrick Park, but in the process developed a loyal following.  Mr. Sanabria, a 10-year resident of Coral Gables never before voted in a local election.

In the end, voters chose Maria Anderson to uphold George Merrick's vision and represent them in the next four years.
