CORAL GABLES AREA DEMOCRATIC CLUB

                          Yes we did!

President Obama and the Democrats passed historic legislation to provide comprehensive health care  for all Americans.

This legislation will provide many benefits to all America.

Small businesses will receive significant tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for all their employees.

Seniors will receive a rebate to reduce drug costs not yet covered under Medicare.

Young people will be allowed coverage under their parents' plan until the age of 26.

Early retirees will receive help to reduce premium costs.

Children will be protected against discrimination on the basis of medical history.

Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need, starting in just 90 days.

Insured Americans will be protected from seeing their insurance revoked when they get sick, or facing restrictive annual limits on the care they receive.

All Americans will benefit from significant new investments to train primary care doctors, nurses, and public health professionals, and the creation of state-level consumer assistance programs to help all patients understand and defend our new rights.

The Coral Gables Area Democratic Club welcomed state senator and attorney general candidate, Dan Gelber to its August 27, 2009 meeting.  Gelber, who comes from a family of teachers and prosecutors has dedicated his life to serving the public.  Not only has he been involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for several decades, he co-founded "Camp Fiesta" a camp for  children suffering from cancer and he volunteers at the camp each summer.

Gelber spoke of his many years of service as a federal prosecutor and his terms in both the Florida house and senate.  He  warned of a looming budget crisis in Florida related to Governor Charlie Crist's handling, or lack thereof, of federal stimulus funds.  Instead of using funds to stimulate the economy, Crist used the funds to help balance the budget.  Next year when tax revenues drop in Florida's service oriented economy, there will be no extra infusion of cash.  Drastic cuts will need to be taken.

By then, Charlie will be well into his Florida Senate campaign and the state legislature will have to clean up the mess.

Put people first.  Support Democratic ideas,  causes and candidates! Don't let your inaction boost causes you don't believe in.

The party that would have us believe they put country first, does anything but.  Rush Limbaugh, the voice of the Republican Party has publicly announced that "I hope Obama fails."  Republican Senator Jim DeMint says "If we're able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo.  It will break him."

Support what is best for the country!  VOTE DEMOCRAT!

      Lisa Lesperance speaks to club

Lisa Les
perance, the sole Democrat running for the Florida House District 117 spoke to the Gables Dems club on February 25, 2010.  Lesperance, who was brought up in the very district from which she is running, spoke of homeowner foreclosures, tax loopholes and education.  She stressed the need for a homeowner's "Bill of Rights" citing the 777% increase in foreclosure rates over the last few years.

With all their anti-tax rhetoric, the Republicans have managed to raise user fees which affect many unsuspecting residents by surprise.  Driver license fees and state park entry fees have doubled.  Lesperance, on the other hand favors closing tax loopholes that out of state companies have taken advantage of.   This more equitable tax structure would raise money for the state without hitting the little guy where it hurts most.

Good government needs good legal minds.  At present, lawyers comprise a mere 20% of the state legislators in Tallahassee.  Only 3 women are in this camp.  Lesperance would be a fine addition  to the delegation.
