THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
updated September 7, 2022
By Katie Lepri Cohen, WLRN News
Updated omicron boosters are now available for people 12 and older.
The newly authorized shots are reformulated versions of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines that target both the original strain of the coronavirus and the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants that people are catching now. (In the U.S., nearly 90% of infections are caused by BA.5.) Unlike previous boosters, these boosters offer a level of protection that wasn’t possible with the original doses.
COVID is still circulating and scientists don't think it's winding down. Hundreds of people are still dying from the virus every day. The hope is that these boosters will blunt yet another winter surge. It could also be the last you’ll need for a while.
